The good pub guide review

This is a lovely spot just back from the sea in a small fishing cove, just round the headland from Port Isaac. The chatty bar has low beams, flagstones and carpeting, some exposed stone, a big log fire and St Austell Proper Job and Tribute, Skinners Betty Stogs and Timothy Taylors Landlord on handpump, nine wines by the glass, 40 gins, 20 malt whiskies and farm cider. The lounge has some interesting old local photographs. You can eat in the bar or in the 'Captain's Cabin', which is a little room where everything is shrunk to scale (old oak chest, model sailing ship, even the prints on the white stone walls). There are seats and tables under parasols at the front, with more in the terraced garden. The 15 individually furnished and comfortable bedrooms have plenty of character, though the stairs up to most of them are fairly steep (staff will carry your luggage). Many come here for lunch after blowing the cobwebs away on a walk along the splendid and usually bracing surrounding clifftops. The TV series Doc Martin is filmed in the village and surroundings.

The good pub guide food review

Good quality food includes lunchtime sandwiches, crab and lobster tart with apple, beetroot and cress, shell-on prawns with chilli gremolata, crispy cod cheeks with pickled vegetables and garlic mayonnaise, lamb chop with pomegranate, mint oil and curd, dry-aged local steaks with garlic butter, and puddings such as warm chocolate pudding with honeycomb and lime and orange crème catalan with crystallised pistachios.
