The good pub guide review

This large, handsome roadside pub, part of the Brunning & Price group, has attractive rooms spreading out from the main bar area and is especially popular with families. There are rugs on flagstones, open log fires, plenty of prints and cartoons on the walls, a mix of wooden or high-backed leather dining chairs, button-back armchairs and cushioned wooden settles and wall seats and polished tables. Also, elegant metal chandeliers, mirrors, house plants and a bustling, friendly atmosphere. Helpful, efficient staff serve Phoenix Brunning & Price Original and changing guests such as Dark Horse Hetton Pale Ale, Lancaster Blonde, Listers Best Bitter and Timothy Taylors Boltmaker and Landlord on handpump, 18 wines by the glass, around 30 gins and almost 40 whiskies; board games. In warm weather you can sit at rattan-style chairs and tables on the attractive terrace in front of the building. Disabled access. There's a lot to do and see nearby, including exploring Broughton Hall Estate's 3,000 acres of beautiful countryside and parkland.

The good pub guide food review

Brasserie-style food (with a separate gluten-free menu) includes sandwiches and 'light bites', a meze plate, chicken, ham and leek pie with mash and buttered greens, cauliflower, chickpea and squash tagine with lemon and almond couscous, pork and leek sausages with mash and onion gravy, beer-battered cod and chips, fish pie (salmon, smoked haddock and prawns), crispy beef salad with sweet chilli sauce and roasted cashew nuts, venison haunch with dauphinoise potatoes and blackberrry jus, and puddings such as chocolate and orange tart with passion-fruit sorbet and hot waffle with caramelised banana and honeycomb ice-cream.
