The good pub guide review

Tucked away on a quiet lane behind the village church, this homely traditional inn has been providing food and shelter on the Norfolk coast for more than 500 years. The formal entrance hall has sofas and fender seats by a big open fire, there's another room with more sofas and a cylindrical woodburner and also a simply furnished dining room. There's a great deal of character in the rambling rooms here and plenty of space for eating and drinking. The main bar has beams, big lamps, brass and copper jugs and pans, cushioned window seats, chairs and settles around dark sturdy tables on quarry tiles and a woodburning stove; the antique penny-in-the-hole game is hidden under a bench cushion. A second bar, favoured by locals, is smaller, with some fine carving around the counter. Five real ales on handpump including Adnams Ghost Ship, Norfolk Brewhouse Moon Gazer Pintail and Woodfordes Mardlers Mild and Wherry, good wines by the glass and 15 gins; background music and board games. A quarry-tiled conservatory (used for eating) has fairy lights and steps that lead up to the back garden with grey-painted picnic-sets and a couple of cabanas; out in front are more picnic-sets. The 13 bedrooms, some with marshland views, are warm and comfortable and you can walk from here to the salt marshes about a mile away.

Good quality food includes sandwiches, crispy brie with cranberry sauce, prawn cocktail, pea and feta risotto with crispy onions, home-cooked ham and eggs, roast chicken caesar salad, fresh local crab salad, burger with toppings, coleslaw and skinny fries, sea bass with dill butter and crushed new potatoes, rump steak with peppercorn sauce, and puddings such as chocolate and pecan brownie with chocolate sauce and sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce.
