The good pub guide review

Follow quiet country lanes a little way north of Blickling Hall and the market town of Aylsham to discover this elegant and gently civilised place. Built in 1806 in a striking Italianate style for Lord Walpole's estate, it's worth seeking out for its unique character and friendly atmosphere. The two-room bar is simple but stylish with high ceilings, light terracotta walls and tall windows with cream and gold curtains ' all lending a feeling of space, though it's not large. There's a mix of seats from built-in wall settles to wicker fireside chairs, as well as log fires and flowers. Courteous staff serve Woodfordes Wherry and a changing guest such as Panther Red Panther on handpump and several wines by the glass. The windows look out on to a charming old-fashioned gravel stableyard with plenty of chairs, benches and tables. A pretty six-table parlour on the right has another big log fire. The five bedrooms are comfortable and up to date.

The good pub guide food review

Top rated food includes chicken liver pâté with red onion marmalade, grilled fresh mackerel with poached rhubarb, roasted cauliflower with blood orange and hummus, savoury cheesecake with roasted squash, red onions and baby tomatoes, local venison loin with braised red cabbage and fondant potato, herb-crusted cod fillet with parsnip mash and lemon and white wine sauce, slow-cooked local pork belly with mashed potatoes and chickpea, tomato and chorizo stew, and puddings such as vanilla pannacotta with poached rhubarb and mixed berry pavlova.
