The good pub guide review
A forest of stripped standing timbers and open doorways have created cosy, rambling areas throughout this 18th-c pub. There's an agreeable mix of highly polished old tables and chairs, frame-to-frame pictures on cream walls, woodburning stoves and big pot plants. Deep green or dark red dado and a few old rugs dotted on the polished wood floors provide splashes of colour; other areas are more subdued with beige carpeting. Attentive young staff serve St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional and guests from breweries such as Crouch Vale, Leigh on Sea, Mighty Oak and Nethergate on handpump, a dozen wines by the glass and a good range of spirits including 50 different gins; background music. A back terrace has tables and chairs under parasols and plenty of picnic-sets on a lawn.
The good pub guide food review
Good, modern food includes 'light bites', barbecue chicken wings, five-spiced duck leg with spring onion, cucumber, hoisin sauce and pancakes, summer risotto with broad beans, asparagus, radish and lemon, chicken, ham and leek pie with mash and buttered greens, beef bourguignon with horseradish mash and buttered kale, duck breast with crispy leg croquettes, celeriac purée and cherry jus, and puddings such as summer pudding, crème brûlée and Cheshire Farm ice-cream and sorbets.
