The good pub guide review

As you might have guessed from the name, this is racehorse-training country and the walls of this welcoming local pub are hung with big Alfred Munnings racecourse prints, card collections of Grand National winners and other horse and jockey pictures. The place is split into two sections: a contemporary dining area and an older part with flagstones, wood flooring, low beams and raftered ceilings. There are old high-backed settles and leather armchairs, a woodburning stove in a big fireplace and an easy-going atmosphere. There's a beer named for the pub (from Greene King), Ruddles Best and a changing guest on handpump, carefully chosen wines by the glass, 20 gins and a dozen malt whiskies; background music and board games. As well as tables under a heated courtyard canopy, there's a separate fenced garden with a few picnic-sets. Three bedrooms, housed in another building, are quiet and comfortable. Disabled access.

The good pub guide food review

Quite a choice of popular food includes sandwiches, home-smoked trout pâté with wholemeal toast, king prawn skewer with sweet chilli and garlic, courgetti spaghetti with peppers, aubergine and onion in passata, stone-baked pizzas, breaded wholetail scampi with peas and chips, fish pie, crab macaroni cheese, steaks with onion rings, chips and a choice of sauce, and puddings such as chocolate pot with strawberries and chantilly cream and seasonal crumble with vanilla custard.
