The good pub guide review

This imposing 17th-c country house has been sympathetically restored by Brunning & Price, combining striking exposed stone walls with more homely touches. The bustling bar features an open fire, wooden chairs around a large farmhouse kitchen table, elegant metal chandeliers and stools against the counter. Various open-plan rooms lead off here with rugs on wooden floors, wall-to-wall prints, photographs and mirrors on pale walls above painted dados, more open fires, antique-style cushioned dining chairs around dark tables, and house plants and candles. One cosy character room has armchairs and chesterfield sofas on flagstones and bare stone walls, and there's a spacious conservatory dining extension. Cheerful staff serve Phoenix Brunning & Price Original plus guests such as Hawkshead Bitter, Lancaster Blonde, Moorhouses Black Cat, Pitchfork PG Steam and Timothy Taylors Landlord on handpump, more than 70 gins, 50 malt whiskies and ten farm ciders; board games. Good quality chairs, benches and tables under parasols are set out on a terrace surrounded by lawns with pleasant country views; there's the usual trademark tractor for children. Disabled access.

Appealing modern food includes sandwiches and 'light bites', garlic and chilli king prawns, chicken caesar croquettes with parmesan and anchovy salad, crispy vegetable parcels with spiced mango dip, roast duck breast with crispy leg croquettes, celeriac purée and cherry jus, steak burger with fries, braised feather of beef bourguignon with horseradish mash and buttered kale, cheddar, leek and balsamic onion quiche, cauliflower, chickpea and squash tagine with lemon and almond couscous, and puddings such as lemon cheesecake with raspberry ripple ice-cream, and chocolate and orange tart with passion-fruit sorbet.
