The good pub guide review

There's a lot to see near this sizeable pub, making it a great choice for lunch or an evening meal. In fine weather, customers like to make use of the seats and benches among flowering tubs and raised flower beds on the spreading terrace behind the pub, overlooking a lake. Inside, partitioning and metal standing posts split larger areas in the open-plan rooms into cosier drinking and dining spaces and throughout there are the trademark house plants, books on shelves, elegant metal chandeliers and standard lamps, stubby candles and fresh flowers. Seating ranges from groups of leather armchairs to all manner of cushioned wooden dining chairs around character tables on rugs or bare boards, the walls (some half-panelled) are hung with hundreds of prints, and mirrors hang above open fires (some in pretty Victorian fireplaces). From the long counter, friendly, helpful staff serve Phoenix Brunning & Price Original and Wye Valley Butty Bach with guests such as Greene King Escapade and XX Mild, Salopian Oracle, Titanic Plum Porter and Weetwood Eastgate on handpump, 16 wines by the glass, 100 whiskies, 120 gins and 80 rums; board games. There's a rack outside for cyclists, and a circular walk from the pub to help you work up your thirst or appetite. Disabled parking and loos.

The good pub guide food review

Nicely presented, tasty food includes sandwiches, smoked salmon with orange and beetroot salad with horseradish cream, crispy baby squid and sweet chilli sauce, roast duck breast with crispy leg croquettes, celeriac purée and cherry jus, pea and mint tortellini with garden pea velouté and asparagus, and puddings such as lemon tart with fresh raspberries and chantilly cream and chocolate and orange tart with passion-fruit sorbet.
