The good pub guide review

This friendly, busy pub backs on to Beatrix Potter's farm, on the quieter side of Lake Windermere. It was already centuries old when Potter immortalised it in The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, and the low-beamed main bar has plenty of rustic charm, with a rough slate floor, game and fowl pictures, a grandfather clock, a log fire and fresh flowers. Barngates Tag Lag, Cumbrian Legendary Loweswater Gold and Hawkshead Bitter and Brodies Prime on handpump, ten wines by the glass, ten malt whiskies and six farm ciders; board games and darts. There are pleasant views of the wooded Claife Heights from seats in the extended garden. The pretty bedrooms have a country outlook; breakfasts are good.

The good pub guide food review

Popular food includes lunchtime sandwiches, potted chicken liver and pistachio pâté with cumberland sauce, crayfish tails with marie rose sauce, gnocchi with wilted spinach and mushrooms in creamy tarragon sauce, cumberland sausage with caramelised red onion gravy and apple and sage mash, chicken with tarragon, red wine, mushroom and onion sauce and rösti potatoes, beer-battered haddock with chips, pork medallions with brandy, green peppercorn and sage cream, bubble and squeak and apple fritter, and puddings such as chocolate brownie with berries and vanilla ice-cream and raspberry eton mess.
