The good pub guide review

This bustling pub sits at the head of a charming, unspoilt village, its outdoor picnic tables occupying the triangular green opposite. Drinkers, diners and overnight guests have nothing but praise for the capable management and all-round high standards here. The lively bars have beams, upholstered banquettes, wheelback and captain's chairs around a variety of tables on polished wooden floors, landscapes by a local artist on the walls and a log fire in the broad stone fireplace; an adjoining snug has a woodburning stove, comfortable sofas and old photographs of the pub and the village. Black Sheep Best and guests such as Cropton Yorkshire Moors and Timothy Taylors Golden Best on handpump, ten or so wines by the glass, bottled Yorkshire ciders, local gins and a dozen malt whiskies are served by courteous staff. There are more tables in the back garden, along with eight of the Horsehoe's 14 clean, comfortable bedrooms (the rest are in the main building); dogs are allowed in one of the garden rooms. The inn is a good base for exploring the North York Moors National Park; Levisham has a station on the scenic North Yorkshire Moors Railway line, and its historic church is worth a visit. Breakfasts are hearty. Sister pub is the Fox & Rabbit in Lockton, a couple of miles away.

The good pub guide food review

With an emphasis on local suppliers, the well regarded food includes sandwiches, fishcakes with tartare sauce, brie and parma ham parcels with melba toast, Cajun chicken salad with chips, grilled gammon with fried egg and pineapple, butternut squash, leek and pine nut risotto, braised lamb shank with rosemary mash and mint gravy, slow-roasted pork belly with thyme mash, cider gravy and apple sauce, deep-fried Whitby haddock with mushy peas and chips, and desserts such as rhubarb syllabub and chocolate truffle torte.
