The good pub guide review
A firm favourite with so many (us included), this is a proper rustic pub ' and happily nothing has changed under the newish licensees. The partly flagstoned, partly red-tiled main room has winged settles and built-in wall benches around narrow, dark wooden tables, window seats, a big log fire with antique guns, stirrups and bits on the mantelbeam (and dozing dogs in front) and lots of humorous cartoons and photographs of the pub. A window in an inner snug retains metal bars from the days when this room was the petty sessions gaol; also, high-backed settles, lots of mugs hanging from black beams and numerous small prints and photos. A simply furnished room is the only place where children are allowed; background music. Butcombe Best, Courage Best, Exmoor Gold, Otter Bitter and an occasional guest on handpump or tapped from the cask, six wines by the glass and two farm ciders. The garden has rustic tables and benches, with more to one side of the car park. Paths from the pub lead up Naish Hill or to the Iron Age hill fort at Cadbury Camp and local cycle routes are nearby. Wheelchair access but no disabled loos.
