The good pub guide review
A perennially popular, creeper-clad country pub run by two brothers who understand the meaning of hospitality: the welcome here is always warm, the upkeep flawless and standards reliably high. The interconnected rooms have beams, panelling and some exposed stonework, wall settles and banquettes, dark pubby chairs and tables on tartan carpet, a log fire and an inviting atmosphere; fresh flowers, brasses, china plates, prints and old local photographs too. The locals' bar is busy and cheerful and there are panoramic views from the comfortable restaurant ' it's worth arriving early to bag a window seat. Black Sheep Best, Cropton Yorkshire Moors, Marstons Wainwright and Timothy Taylors Golden Best on handpump, over a dozen wines by the glass and 12 malt whiskies; background music and pool. Outside are seats under parasols and some picnic-sets. The inn is in the North York Moors National Park, so there are plenty of surrounding walks, including to nearby Dalby Forest. This is sister pub to the Horseshoe in nearby Levisham.
The good pub guide food review
Rewarding food includes hearty pub classics supplemented by more varied blackboard fare, plus sandwiches and a daily roast with trimmings. Dishes might include chicken liver and brandy pâté with chutney, pan-seared pigeon breast with sautéed new potatoes and chorizo, toad in the hole, steak and ale pie, beef lasagne with chips, salad and garlic bread, pheasant breast with dauphinoise potatoes, wild mushrooms and red wine sauce, Mediterranean pasta bake, and puddings such as lemon and lime cheesecake and crème brûlée.
