The good pub guide review
Over four centuries, this whitewashed moorland inn has been a beacon of warmth and hospitality for all sorts of people, from users of the old packhorse trails to builders of the nearby Widdop and Gorple reservoirs, and today's walkers and riders on the Pennine Way and Pennine Bridleway, which both pass nearby. Décor is simple and traditional: the snug, carpeted bar has winter fires, window seats cut into the partly panelled, stripped-stone walls (from where you can take in the beautiful views), sturdy furnishings and horsey mementoes. Well kept Black Sheep Best and Marstons Wainwright plus a couple of changing guests on handpump, over 100 single malt whiskies along with some Irish ones, and 14 or so wines by the glass are served by friendly, accommodating staff. There are seats outside in the cobblestoned beer garden and pretty summer hanging baskets. Plans to open three bedrooms should come to fruition in early 2021.
The good pub guide food review
Satisfying, fairly priced food includes sandwiches, yorkshire pudding filled with sausages, onions and gravy, rib-eye and other steaks with traditional sauces, lamb shank with mash and gravy, steak and ale pie, feta salad, and desserts such as sticky toffee pudding and ginger and rhubarb with custard.
