The good pub guide review

A plain white façade (and yes, there's a pond) belies a beautifully designed interior. The clever layout combines a big, cheerful open main section plus plenty of other snug and intimate smaller areas, and the décor and furnishings are unusual and varied. A lofty central area, partly skylit and full of contented diners, has a row of booths facing the long bar counter, and numerous other tables with banquettes or overstuffed small armchairs on pale floorboards laid with rugs; then comes a conservatory overlooking picnic-sets on a flagstone terrace, and a lawn beyond. Off on two sides are many rooms with much lower ceilings, some with heavy dark beams, some with bright polychrome tile or intricate parquet flooring: William Morris wallpaper here, dusky paintwork or neat bookshelves there, sofas, armchairs, a fire in an old-fashioned open range, lots of old prints and some intriguing objects including carved or painted animal skulls; background music. Fishpool Best, Weetwood Cheshire Cat and Eastgate plus a guest such as Adnams Broadside on handpump, 15 or so wines by the glass, good cocktails and farm cider; unobtrusive background music and upstairs lavatories. Disabled access. Sister pubs are the Pheasant in Burwardsley and the Bears Paw in Warmingham.

The good pub guide food review

As well as afternoon tea and quality own-made pizzas, the highly rated food includes flatbreads and nibbles, starters such as curried salmon and smoked haddock fishcake, truffle honey and goat's cheese mousse and tiger prawn pil pil, mains including steak and onion pie, chilli con carne with beetroot tortilla chips, Thai red curry and breaded Whitby scampi and puddings such as double chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and various knickerbocker glories.
