The good pub guide review

Terraces and lawns surround this extended, newly refurbished pub and there are plenty of seats under parasols from which to enjoy the view of the nearby Malvern Hills. Inside, you can sit in the old part of the building with its history and character or in the new, light and bright dining areas. It's open-plan throughout, but with appealingly cosy corners and nooks. There are leather or wooden dining chairs around an assortment of tables on rugs and bare boards, button-back wall banquettes and armchairs and several open fires. Shelves are lined with old books, walls are hung with framed newspaper cuttings, motor racing pictures and mirrors, and there are elegant metal chandeliers and house plants large and small. Friendly and efficient staff serve a wide range of drinks, including Phoenix Brunning & Price Original, the Hop Shed's Frizzle, Timothy Taylors Boltmaker and Wye Valley Hopfather on handpump, 21 wines by the glass (including bubbly) and a wide range of whiskies hailing from Scotland to Japan.

Interesting, varied food includes smoked salmon with orange and beetroot salad and horseradish cream, five-spiced duck leg with spring onion, cucumber, hoisin sauce and pancakes, and crispy baby squid and sweet chilli sauce for starters, plus mains such as braised shoulder of lamb with new potatoes and rosemary gravy, king prawn linguine with chilli and tomato, grilled sea bass fillets with potato and shallot terrine and chervil and lemon cream sauce, pork and leek sausages with mash, buttered greens and onion gravy, and sweet potato, aubergine and spinach Malaysian curry with coconut rice and pak choi. Typical desserts are chocolate and orange tart with passion-fruit sorbet and sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice-cream.
