The good pub guide review

A new husband (chef) and wife (front of house) team took over this popular, lively pub a few weeks before the coronavirus lockdown, but are doing well, winning praise from customers old and new for their warm welcome and enticing food. A small flagstoned bar area on the left has pictures above a stripped-brick dado, a ticking clock and a log fire. Lottie the pub dog sometimes snoozes in front of the latter. There's carpet around to the right of the serving counter (with a couple of stylish wrought-iron bar chairs), and miscellaneous chairs and mixed tables are spread throughout. Drinks include 15 wines by the glass from a well chosen list, local cider, a beer named for the pub (from Bowman) and Longdog Bunny Chaser on handpump and local Silverback gin. Outside, there's a front terrace with solid tables and chunky seats and a sizeable side garden with picnic-sets; there are pleasant views across the quiet lane to the cricket field and beyond. Some lovely wildlife-filled walks are nearby. Disabled access.

The good pub guide food review

Enjoyable food from a varied menu includes baguettes, tacos (blackened haddock, spicy pork, jackfruit) with mango and chilli salsa and wasabi mayo, salt and pepper calamari, moules frites, slow-cooked shoulder of lamb with Greek salad and tzatziki, summer salads with local watercress, wood-fired pizzas, a curry of the day, vegetable tagliatelle with cashew nut pesto, and puddings such as lemon tart and Belgian chocolate torte.
