The good pub guide review

This gracious red-brick pub on the Hursley Estate has eight comfortable bedrooms, all named after celebrated incumbents of the manor and its land ' from Henry de Blois, original owner in the 12th c, to the Spitfire (Hursley House was control centre for the Spitfire programme during the war). The bar is pleasantly appointed: cushioned and shuttered window seats, high-backed plush green chairs and chunky leather stools around scrubbed tables on black floor slates, one high table with equally high chairs, and a raised fireplace with church candles on the mantelpiece above. Stools line the S-shaped, grey-painted counter where they serve Gritchie's English Lore and Ringwood Razorback on handpump, 17 wines by the glass, 40 gins and ten malt whiskies. A character lower room has a rather fine brick wall, a woodburning stove and wall banquettes with leather and tartan upholstery, and cushioned settles on floorboards; background music, daily papers and board games. The smart courtyard garden has tables equipped with parasols and heaters for the typically mercurial British summer. The skittles alley can be hired for private events.

The good pub guide food review

Pleasing food using local seasonal produce includes mac 'n' cheese truffle fritters, crispy battered haddock and chips, vegan burger with avocado, vegan cheese and fries, pan-fried 8oz rump steak with field mushroom, tomatoes and chips, seared bream fillet with Cornish new potates niçoise, and puddings such as rhubarb and custard crumble pie and eton mess pavlova.
