The good pub guide review

Another successful member of the small Yorkshire-based Provenance Inns & Hotels group, which emphasises a warm welcome, community spirit and good food and drink from across the county at all its pubs. The bar has a convivial atmosphere, flagstones and some original panelling and leather wall seating, wooden chairs and bright tiled tables. Black Sheep Best, Hambleton White Boar and Theakstons Best on handpump, 14 wines by the glass, cocktails/mocktails and more than 20 malt whiskies. There's also a dining area with cushioned wooden chairs around a mix of tables on pale flagstones, a woodburner in a brick fireplace and wood stacked beside. The modern dining extension dominates the pub and has floor-to-ceiling windows, browny-orange upholstered dining chairs and numerous old pictures and maps, plus two large mirrors against slate grey walls; background music. Doors from here lead out to a neat terrace with modern seats and tables set among plants in planters and a striking wire black bull. There's also the James Herriot Room, for private dining.

The good pub guide food review

Food is excellent and includes lunchtime sandwiches, prawn and crayfish salad, twice-baked cheese soufflé with celeriac and poached pear salad, wagyu burger with chunky chips, sage and chestnut gnocchi with truffle butter, sea bass fillet with king prawn and chorizo risotto, venison loin and braised shoulder crumble with smoked potatoes, roast spiced aubergine with vegan feta and pickled beetroot, and puddings such as rhubarb and almond tart with amaretto custard and vanilla pannacotta with poached peaches.
