The good pub guide review
A lovely, easy-going atmosphere reigns in this attractive old pub, in a pretty location not far from the River Meon. Local ales include Bowman Swift One and Wallops Wood ' the brewery is only a mile away, so they're in perfect condition ' plus ciders on handpump and ten wines by the glass from a short, carefully chosen list. The L-shaped, open-plan central bar is the main focus. Well spaced tables on carpet or neat bare boards are spread about with low leather chesterfields and an assortment of comfortably cushioned chairs at one end; a dark panelled dado, dark beams and joists and a modicum of country oddments emphasise the freshness of the crisp white paintwork. There's a good log fire, board games if more entertainment is required, and regular meal and movie events if you want to make a night of it. To one side, with a separate entrance, is the village post office. There are picnic-sets outside. The walks along and around the river are lovely.
The good pub guide food review
A wide choice of well regarded food includes home-made bread, baguettes with interesting fillings, gluten-free wraps and snacks such as truffled macaroni cheese and crispy crab wontons. Also, roasted pigeon breast or goats cheese with potato, parsley and pickled onion salad, mussels with white wine, herbs and cream, pork sausages with mash and onion gravy, chestnut, shallot and thyme tart with sautéed baby spinach, roasted lamb rump with creamed savoy cabbage, pea purée and roast potatoes, spiced black bean burger with fries, and puddings such as poached pear and ginger cheesecake and caramelised coconut rice pudding.
