The good pub guide review
This is a good spot for alfresco eating and drinking, with plenty of sturdy tables outside ' some on a sizeable terrace with a side awning, others by weeping willows on the main lawn behind the car park, more on smaller lawns around the building. Inside the handsome red-brick building, a series of rambling rooms surround the large central bar; the various areas are interconnected but manage to also feel distinct and individual. A mix of dining chairs are arranged around assorted tables on rugs or polished floorboards, attractive pictures are hung frame-to-frame and big windows let in plenty of daylight; church candles, careful spotlighting and chandeliers add atmosphere. There are several woodburning stoves and log fires, including one in a big inglenook in a cosy, traditionally tiled black-beamed end room and another by a welcoming set of leather armchairs. As is usual with Brunning & Price pubs, the atmosphere is chatty and informal, and staff are friendly and efficient. St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional, Enville Ale and Wye Valley HPA plus two or three rotating guests such as Ludlow Best and Sharps Doom Bar on handpump, 22 wines by the glass (including fizz), 80 malt whiskies, 70 gins and two farm ciders; background music and board games. There's a private dining room upstairs.
