The good pub guide review

Dating from around 1640, this attractive golden-stone inn has been at the centre of village life for centuries. The character bar and dining room have a log fire in a fine inglenook fireplace and a woodburning stove in a second fireplace (the ironwork is original) with armchairs beside it. Also, an airy bow-window seat, ladderback and farmhouse chairs and cushioned settles on old flagstones or bare boards, and fresh flowers and church candles. Real ales on handpump include their own-brewed Yubberton ales (Yubby Bitter, Yubby Goldie and the seasonal Yawnie Bitter) plus two local guests (maybe North Cotswold Moreton Mild, Otter Bitter or Wye Valley Dorothy Goodbodys stout), good wines from a thoughtful annotated list, nine gins, farm cider and winter mulled wine. Board games, bagatelle, shut the box and dominoes. Three tables in the bar are for owners with dogs. An arched stone wall shelters seats and tables under parasols on the terrace and picnic-sets line the lawn. The five well equipped, country-style bedrooms are very comfortable and breakfasts are good. Hidcote (National Trust) and Kiftsgate Court Gardens are both nearby. This is sister pub to the Killingworth Castle in Wootton (Oxfordshire).

The good pub guide food review

Enterprising food includes as much organic produce as possible: ox cheek with barbecue carrots and smoked mashed potato, confit trout with dill crème fraîche, barbecue summer squash with red onion, spring onion and tenderstem broccoli, beer-battered haddock and chips, lamb suet pudding with charred onions and date ketchup, whole plaice with sautéed potatoes, crispy capers and beurre noisette, and puddings such as baked lemon curd with strawberry and meringue, and peanut brittle and honey pannacotta with rhubarb and granola. Takeaway fish and chops on Friday 5.30-7pm.
