The good pub guide review

A community-minded village like Hambledon needs a great pub at its heart and it has a beauty in the Merry Harriers, with its warm and welcoming bar, varied accommodation and unusual llama treks. With 16th-c origins, it has beams, a huge inglenook log fire and pine tables on bare boards in the bar, with four well kept changing ales on handpump such as Andwell Gold Muddler, Crafty Brewing Crafty One and Surrey Hills Shere Drop, local cider, several wines by the glass from a thoughtful list that includes a local sparkler, served by helpful staff. The more formal dining rooms have an attractive mix of wooden chairs and tables on polished boards and woodburning stoves. There are seats out in front and in the big garden with boules, chess and a children's play area. If you want to stay over, there's plenty of choice: four comfortable rooms in the inn, six quiet garden rooms and five charming and well appointed shepherd's huts. The summer guided treks (including picnic hampers) with one of the eight resident llamas are popular and great fun. Good walks nearby.

The good pub guide food review

Pleasing food uses local produce (some foraged) and includes goats cheese, beetroot and chicory salad with walnut dressing, moules marinière, sausage and mash with onion gravy, fish and chips, beef, chicken fajita or butternut squash and chickpea burger and chips, vegan chilli and rice, rib-eye or sirloin steak and chips, salmon fillet with tenderstem broccoli and Cajun or lemon butter sauce, and classic puddings such as chocolate brownie and lemon tart.
