The good pub guide review

With its appealing menu and an excellent selection of drinks, this substantial pub is always filled with friendly customers. The linked open-plan areas work their way around the long, solidly built counter, with a mix of dining chairs and sturdy tables on polished tiles or stripped oak boards with rugs. There are nicely lit prints and mirrors on cream walls between a mainly dark dado, plenty of house plants, open fires and deep red ceilings. Original bow windows and a large skylight keep the place light and airy, and french windows open on to a spacious balustraded deck with teak tables and chairs, and a view down to ducks swimming on a big pond in the sizeable garden. Friendly attentive staff serve Phoenix Brunning & Price Original and Weetwood Eastgate with guests such as Peerless Pale, Salopian Oracle, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Wincle Indian Runner on handpump, as well as 20 or so wines by the glass, 15 rums, more than 50 gins and 35 whiskies; board games. Good disabled access and facilities.

The good pub guide food review

Well liked, inventive food includes summer vegetable risotto with broad beans, radish, asparagus and lemon, halloumi fries with tomato salsa, five spiced duck leg with spring onion, cucumber, hoisin sauce and pancakes, braised feather of beef bourguignon with horseradish mash and buttered kale, sweet potato, aubergine and spinach Malaysian curry, king prawn linguine with chilli, tomato and parmesan crisp, and puddings such as chocolate and orange tart with passion-fruit sorbet and a British farmhouse cheese board with biscuits, chutney and celery.
