The good pub guide review

Although the interior of this commodious red-brick village local has been opened up, the neatly kept rooms still retain a cottagey feel as they ramble around the pleasantly lit central bar. Each room (some with open fires) is nicely furnished with an appealing variety of well spaced sturdy wooden tables and chairs, a couple of tall filled bookcases and just the right amount of carefully chosen bric-a-brac, properly lit pictures and plants. On a warm day, you'll need to arrive early if you want to bag one of the wooden tables on the terrace or a picnic-set on the lawn in the neatly kept and slightly elevated garden; the views of the splendid church at the end of this pretty village and the distant Peckforton Hills are lovely. You'll find the likes of Phoenix Brunning & Price Traditional, Timothy Taylors Boltmaker, Titanic Iceberg and Weetwood Eastgate on handpump, alongside a pleasing selection of over 20 wines by the glass, good ranges of gins and whiskies; background music and board games. Disabled access.

The good pub guide food review

The day's tasty offerings kick off with an 'elevensies' menu of light, breakfasty dishes and include 'light bites' and afternoon tea. On the main menu, starters include summer vegetable risotto, five-spiced duck leg with spring onion, cucumber, hoisin sauce and pancakes and hummus with toasted flatbread, mains such as braised shoulder of lamb with new potatoes and rosemary gravy, pea and mint tortellini with garden pea velouté and asparagus, and rump steak with dijon mustard and tarragon butter, and puddings such as chocolate and orange tart with passion-fruit sorbet and triple chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice-cream.
