The good pub guide review

Not surprsingly, given its location on the edge of Wimbledon Common, this spacious 18th-c gastropub is extremely popular with walkers and their dogs at lunchtime. There's always a good mix of both drinkers and diners, and the efficient, friendly staff manage to keep things running smoothly, even when it gets busy. The large, roomy main bar, with a step between its two halves, has high ceilings with unusual chandeliers, all sorts of wooden and leather dining chairs around scrubbed or painted tables on stripped boards or parquet flooring, and built-in wall seats and settles with pretty scatter cushions. Sharps Doombar and changing guests such as Sambrooks Wandle and Wimbledon Common Pale Ale on handpump, 13 wines by the glass (plus two sparkling ones) and a few malt whiskies; background music. The three bright bedrooms are light, airy and pretty. Parking is pay-and-display. Sister pub is the Victoria in East Sheen.

The good pub guide food review

A popular all-day menu includes dishes such as smoked and fresh salmon rillettes with toast, ham hock and smoked chicken terrine, burger (beef or vegan versions) and chips, bratwurst with smoked chilli jam, Swiss cheese and jalapeños, duck confit with celeriac purée and pickled red cabbage, roasted butternut squash risotto with red chicory and gorgonzola, and desserts such as 'Wimbledon mess' (smashed meringues and English strawberries) and sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice-cream.
