The good pub guide review

With its leafy garden and proximity to the roaming deer, noisy parrots and grassy acres of Richmond Park (just a five-minute walk away), this is a marvellously bucolic place to stay in the capital. With a buzzing but informal atmosphere, the bar rooms have button-back leather sofas and simple chairs and tables on bare floorboards, candles in lanterns, decorative bright pink or stag's head wallpaper, and stools against the counter where friendly young staff serve Timothy Taylors Landlord, Wimbledon Common Pale Ale and a changing guest on handpump, 14 good wines by the glass and winter mulled wine. There's another room with chandeliers and a stag's head; background music. A conservatory-style dining room has comfortable modern leather chairs around tables of varying sizes on pale floorboards, and doors that lead into the walled (and heated) garden where good quality seats and tables sit under parasols and there's a children's play area. The old stables have been converted into seven comfortable, colourful bedrooms; breakfasts are good. Disabled access but no disabled loos. This is sister pub to the Fox & Grapes in Wimbledon.

The good pub guide food review

Good, interesting food includes breakfast and brunch at weekends. Dishes might include Asian prawn salad with edamame, bean shoots and roasted peanuts, scotch egg with courgette, rocket and runner bean salad, tomato, basil and mozzarella gnocchi with basil pesto, pan-fried whole Cornish lemon sole with samphire, capers and noisette butter, ale-battered fish and chips, and puddings such as baked custard, poached gooseberries and shortbread and chocolate mousse with salted caramel, chocolate soil and honeycomb.
