The good pub guide review

This large and handsome former coaching inn combines old and new to great effect. Original beams, timbering and old stone walls and antique furniture blend cleverly with up-to-date touches including bold wallpaper, strongly coloured paintwork and bright scatter cushions. The room to the right of the entrance has vintage armchairs and a sofa in front of an open fire; opposite are two bar rooms with chapel chairs and settles, seats in a bow window and a vast bull's head above another open fire. You'll find other rooms up small staircases and through open doorways until you reach the dining rooms ' one clad with reclaimed boards lined with large skulls and seating that consists of long button-back wall banquettes and modern dining chairs. Arkells beers such as 3B and Hoperation IPA on handpump, several wines by the glass, a dozen gins and 13 malt whiskies; background music and board games. Rustic tables and benches are set out at the front, with more seats in a courtyard garden. The 21 bedrooms are neat, comfortable and contemporary and breakfasts are well regarded. Disabled access. Do visit the church, home to Britain's only set of intact medieval stained-glass windows. Sister pubs are the Five Alls in Filkins and the Plough at Kelmscott (both Oxfordshire).

The good pub guide food review

Good, enjoyable food from a lengthy menu includes lunchtime sandwiches, black pudding fritters with apple, radish and tarragon salad, smoked salmon, leek and rarebit tart, slow-cooked pork belly in apple and cider with dauphinoise potatoes, butternut squash, sage and pine nut risotto, steak and kidney pie, beer-battered catch of the day and fries, slow-cooked Indian-spiced leg of lamb with green lentil dhal and coconut rice, a range of steaks, and puddings such as toffee apple pear crumble with crème anglaise and strawberry and Grand Marnier cheesecake with vanilla ice-cream; they also offer breakfast, morning coffee and afternoon tea to non-residents.
