The good pub guide review

In a bustling market town, this is a handsome Georgian inn with a good mix of customers. It's a civilised and friendly place and the little bare-boards front bar has built-in cushioned wall seats and a settle around various tables, a woodburning stove, Butcombe Original plus two guests, an excellent wine list with 21 by the glass and a dozen gins. A small dining room is furnished with plush chairs, a wall banquette and pretty botanical-themed prints, while the main restaurant is light and airy with pretty country flowers and candles on tables. Hung with fairy lights at night, the back courtyard is charming and has plenty of wicker seats. This is a lovely place to stay in 19 newly refurbished bedrooms that make a perfect base for exploring the area; two rooms are dog-friendly. The breakfasts are first class.

The good pub guide food review

Particularly good food using seasonal ingredients and produce from their own kitchen garden includes seared scallops with peas, crispy squid, ham hock and hollandaise sauce, confit duck leg with orange citrus and celeriac, home-grown vegetables with toasted almonds, garlic and chilli butter, roasted monkfish with curried green lentils, fennel and garlic nasturtium, braised beef boulangère with truffle, carrots and radish, beer-battered haddock and chips, and puddings such as chocolate mousse with pistachio cream and salted caramel and burnt passion-fruit cream with mango and coconut.
