The good pub guide review

Handy for the Pennine Way, this comfortable and stylish 18th-c stone inn on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, a few miles from Skipton, has a cosy and welcoming feel. Attracting a good mix of customers, the bar and surrounding dining areas are full of character: cushioned armchairs, built-in wall seats with added cushions, stools, plenty of tables and three log fires (one greets you at the entrance and divides the bar and restaurant). Also, quite a bit of exposed stonework, amusing prints on cream walls, five real ales on handpump ' Dark Horse Hetton Pale Ale, Timothy Taylors Landlord and three changing guests, 13 wines by the glass, 30 malt whiskies and 50 gins; background music and board games. Tables outside are largely screened from the road by a raised bank. The 21 comfortable, well equipped bedrooms make the ideal base for exploring the area; the surrounding walks are lovely. Disabled access.

The good pub guide food review

Highly thought-of food includes sandwiches, smoked salmon with charred asparagus and spinach, creamy mushrooms topped with stilton, sharing platters, lamb burger with smoked bacon, harissa and mint yoghurt and chips, lasagne, vegetable curry with basmati wild rice, sea bass with tomato and chilli salsa and sautéed potatoes, shredded duck with crispy ginger, beansprouts, spring onions, cucumber, carrots and spiced plum sauce, chicken escalope with rösti potatoes, fish pie with cheesy mash, and puddings such as crème brûlée and sherry trifle.
