The good pub guide review
Located at the southern end of the Peak District National Park, this village inn is surrounded by beautiful countryside and makes a perfect base for exploring the area. The traditional interior here has all the trappings you'd expect of a 17th-c country coaching inn, from roaring log fires, exposed brick hearths and flagstone floors to black beams hung with pewter mugs, and hand-made pine furniture that includes wall settles with floral-print cushions. There's also a conservatory dining room and a cosy front dining room. Real ales from local breweries such as Dancing Duck, Derby, Marstons, Peak, Whim and Wincle are on offer, plus a couple of farm ciders and seven wines by the glass. The landlord is knowledgeable about malt whiskies and he stocks around two dozen; quiet background music. A side garden by an elder tree (with views across fields) has seats and tables, and there are modern tables and chairs under cocktail parasols on a front roadside terrace. It's a short walk from the Tissington Trail, a popular cycling/walking path along a former railway line (best joined at the nearby picture-book village of Tissington). No dogs allowed inside.

Well thought-of food from local suppliers includes chicken liver pâté with fruit compote, sharing deli board, wild mushroom and goats cheese herb crumble, seafood tagliatelle, chicken breast stuffed with chorizo with spicy tomato sauce, sweet potato, chickpea and spinach curry, sirloin steak with onion rings, chips and a choice of sauce, barnsley lamb chop with port, redcurrant and rosemary sauce, and puddings such as lemon meringue roulade and honeycomb and vanilla cheesecake.
