The good pub guide review

This welcoming pub is hidden down a steep, narrow lane in a tranquil village that influenced the landscape of The Wind in the Willows (author Kenneth Grahame lived not far away). Brick-built, the pub is a former farmhouse and dates back to the 17th c. The main bar has a raised inglenook fireplace with logs piled to each side and large brass platters above the bressummer beam, cushioned wall seating, antique-style dining chairs around mixed wooden tables, stubby candles and house plants. Other connected rooms are similarly furnished and throughout you'll find rugs, polished bare boards and carpeting, walls hung with prints, old photos and mirrors, books on shelves and stone and glass bottles. Friendly, well trained staff serve St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter plus guests such as Fullers London Pride, Glastonbury Session IPA, Loddon Hoppit and West Berkshire Good Old Boy on handpump, 21 good wines by the glass and almost 140 gins. In front of the pub are picnic-sets among flowering plants; in the back garden, wooden chairs and tables sit under giant parasols beside B&P's trademark play tractor. Gin and beer festivals are held in summer.

The good pub guide food review

A wide choice of interesting food includes sandwiches and 'light bites', rabbit, leek and bacon pasty, cheese, potato and onion pie with carrot purée and gravy, braised feather of beef bourguignon with horseradish mash and buttered kale, Sri Lankan curry with sweet potato, butternut squash, red pepper and pak choi, cumberland pork sausages with mash and buttered greens, grilled sea bass fillets with potato and shallot terrine and chervil and lemon sauce, and puddings such as crème brûlée and lemon meringue roulade with raspberry sorbet.
