The good pub guide review
Hard by the slopes of Blencathra, this pretty longhouse inn wears its august old age with pride (it dates from 1688) while bestowing it with a fresh, country-kitchen charm in a recent refurb. The linked rooms have beams, a mix of wooden and prettily upholstered dining chairs around polished tables on bare boards, open fires, a sizeable woodburning stove and a handsome old range, prints on freshly painted walls and a partly stripped-stone restaurant. It's a Jennings house, so the likes of Cumberland and Sneck Lifter are on handpump along with a couple of guests perhaps from Keswick or Tirril, several wines by the glass and efficient, friendly service; background music. There are picnic-sets out to the side of the building and in the garden, and fine views towards the Helvellyn range. The lovely beamed bedrooms are freshly and attractively decorated.

Well regarded food includes lunchtime sandwiches, baked garlic mushrooms, salt and pepper calamari, curry of the day, fish and chips, steak, mushroom and ale pie, burger (beef, Cajun chicken or falafel) and chips, slow-roasted pork fillet with new potato, broccoli and butternut squash fricassée and red wine and thyme sauce, and desserts such as sticky toffee pudding and passion fruit and greek yoghurt pannacotta.
