The good pub guide review

This attractive, 300-year-old coaching inn stands on what was the major thoroughfare between London and the West Country. There are plenty of signs of great age in the interconnected rooms and much of interest too: beams and timbering, a pleasing variety of well spread individual tables and chairs on mahogany-stained boards, oriental rugs and some carpet to soften the acoustics, and open fires in attractive tiled fireplaces. Also, a profusion of mainly old or antique prints and mirrors, book-lined shelves, house plants and daily papers. Well trained, courteous staff serve a splendid range of drinks including Brakspears Bitter, Marstons Pedigree, Thwaites Lancaster Bomber and Wychwood Hobgoblin on handpump, 15 wines by the glass, two farm ciders, 110 gins and 50 malt whiskies; background music and board games. There are picnic sets in the sheltered back garden, and teak tables and chairs under parasols on the front terrace.

The good pub guide food review

Rewarding food from a daily changing menu includes sandwiches and 'light bites', crispy baby squid with sweet chill sauce, chicken caesar croquettes, cauliflower, chickpea and squash tagine with couscous, king prawn linguine, steak burger with coleslaw and chips, braised feather of beef bourguignon with horseradish mash and kale, and puddings such as triple chocolate brownie and lemon tart with blackcurrant sorbet. There's a separate gluten-free menu.
