The good pub guide review

This busy old tavern is dripping in history, while also offering a warm welcome, hearty food and well kept beer. The front bar has a pleasing, easy-going atmosphere, heavy 16th-c beams, very broad polished oak floorboards, a magnificent carved overmantel for one of the two roaring log fires and traditional solid furnishings; plenty of pictures on the walls and some interesting breweriana too. It's worth looking at the handsomely proportioned Globe Room used by Oliver Cromwell as his base during the Civil War. Quite a sight, it still has some lovely 17th-c carved dark oak panelling. Attentive staff serve Hook Norton Hooky, Hooky Mild, Old Hooky and a couple of seasonal guest beers on handpump, three craft beers from Hook Norton, 11 wines by the glass, eight gins, fruit wines and several malt whiskies. The little back courtyard has tables and benches under parasols, aunt sally and pretty flowering baskets. New owners were about to take over as we went to press, so there may be changes.

The good pub guide food review

Honest, reasonably priced food includes lunchtime sandwiches and basket meals, baked rosemary camembert with garlic bread, Cajun chicken and chorizo burger with fries, ham and eggs, cumberland sausages with mustard mash, T-bone steak with onion rings, chips and a choice of sauce, mushroom and red wine stroganoff, sea bass with pan-fried new potatoes and chorizo, and puddings such as plum and apple crumble with custard and chocolate brownie with vanilla pod ice-cream and raspberries.
