The good pub guide review

On the fringes of verdant Clytha Park ' a serene location, now that the A40 bypasses to the north ' stands this impressive country inn, becalmed amid its own beautiful, well cared-for grounds, with long heated verandahs and diamond-paned windows for customers to fully take in the garden views. Inside, there's a chatty, easy-going atmosphere and an interesting mix of customers. The bar and lounge are comfortable, light and airy, with nice old furniture, pine settles, window seats with big cushions, scrubbed wooden floors and open log fires; the contemporary restaurant is set with linen. A notable array of drinks includes regular Whoosh from Untapped a few miles down the road, plus four guests from the likes of Felinfoel Kingstone, Tenby Harbwr and Uley on handpump, an extensive wine list, lots of malt whiskies and various continental beers; they hold a cider and beer festival over the late May Bank Holiday weekend. You'll also find darts, bar skittles, boules, board games and a large-screen TV for rugby matches. There's pétanque and a play area in the garden. The three bedrooms (one with a four-poster bed) are comfortable and the Welsh breakfasts are good. The riverside path by the Usk is just a short stroll away.

The good pub guide food review

Reliably high quality food includes, at time of writing, pizzas on Wednesday night, a tapas menu (not Sunday) and various set menus, but this may change. Typical set menu dishes are leek and laverbread rissoles, chargrilled tuna salad niçoise, duck breast with beetroot, sage and garlic and rosemary potatoes, teriyaki chicken with sweetcorn fritters and avocado salad, lentil moussaka with Greek salad, venison and rabbit in red wine pie with mash or chips, smoked haddock with Y-Fenni cheese and champ potatoes, and puddings such as a daily changing cheesecake and blueberry and chocolate trifle.
