The good pub guide review

This charming little pub is deservedly popular, with many visitors returning on a regular basis. Run by a friendly, long-serving landlady, it provides comfortable bedrooms and enjoyable, very fair value food. The heavily beamed public bar on the left has a chatty, easy-going feel, brocade-cushioned wall seats, prints of the village from 1905 onwards, horse tack and a few ship badges and a woodburning stove in a very big stone fireplace; a small door leads to a low-beamed cubbyhole. The snug Drakes Bar has beams hung with tiny cups and big brass keys, a woodburning stove in another stone fireplace, horsebrasses and stirrups, and a mix of seats and tables (note the fine high-backed stripped-pine settle with hood). On the right is a small beamed dining room with settles and tables on flagstones. Darts and board games. There's Dartmoor Jail Ale, Sharps Doom Bar and a guest from Exeter on handpump, ten wines by the glass, a dozen malt whiskies, 15 gins and three farm ciders; darts and board games. There are picnic-sets in the prettily planted and sheltered back garden and the front floral displays are much admired; morris men perform regularly in summer. They also offer an attractive self-catering apartment. Buckland Abbey (National Trust) is close by.

The good pub guide food review

Good value food using includes lunchtime baguettes and ploughman's, home-made fish cakes, roasted tomato, mozzarella and basil tart with fried halloumi and pine nut salad, fritto misto, breaded wholetail scampi, whitebait, calamari and fish goujons with fries, pea and lemon risotto with coconut milk and herbs, Cajun chicken breast with colesaw, sriracha mayonnaise and fries, and puddings such as chocolate and cherry brownie with chocolate sauce and red berry sorbet and white chocolate mousse.
