The good pub guide review

Providing refreshment for over 300 years, this handsome and historic pub is proud to claim Shakespeare as one of its former customers. All aspects of this particularly well run pub are highly and consistently praised, and the professional, hands-on licensees work very hard to achieve this. The attractive interior has plenty of signs of the building's venerable age, and is divided into five comfortable areas, each with its own character. These range from the cosy terracotta-painted bar to a light and airy gallery room with antique wood panelling, solid oak floor and contemporary Lloyd Loom chairs. Flagstone floors, stripped or well polished antique or period-style furniture and three good fires (one in an inglenook) add warmth and cosiness. You'll find Greene King Old Speckled Hen, Hobsons Best, Purity Pure Gold and Pure UBU on handpump and 16 wines (including prosecco, champagne and sweet wine) by the glass; background music. In summer, the virginia creeper-covered exterior is festooned with colourful hanging baskets. The lovely garden has solid teak furniture, a vine-covered terrace, water features and gentle lighting (dogs on leads are allowed here). Disabled access.

The good pub guide food review

The appealing food using local, seasonal produce includes sandwiches and ploughman's, imaginative salads, crispy fried whitebait, deep-fried brie with apricot and ginger compote, horseshoe gammon with pineapple or free-range eggs, lasagne, mixed grill, haddock and chips, sirloin steak with a choice of sauce and chips, and home-made puddings such as chocolate torte with chocolate ice-cream and sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice-cream.

Licensee Introduction

Deep in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside, The Bell Inn is an outstanding 17th century inn, complete with exposed beams, flagstone floors, oak furniture, open fireplaces…and a warm welcome. The Bell Inn has been providing refreshment for over 300 years. According to local history, William Shakespeare was on his way back to Stratford upon Avon in the rain after meeting Drayton and Ben Jonson for a drink at The Bell in Welford, when he contracted fatal pneumonia! Luckily the roads are somewhat better these days, and we can always arrange a taxi for you to get home.

Our Food

Our team of chefs uses locally sourced produce to create a menu combining quality pub food with more innovative cuisine, ensuring both regular and first time visitors to The Bell Inn enjoy a wide choice of excellent food. Whatever you feel like eating – whether it be a really tasty sirloin steak (supplied by the local butcher), homemade lasagne, a delicious Thai green monkfish curry, or something lighter like a smoked chicken remoulade or a sumptuous salad – the comprehensive menu offers the choice to suit your mood, your appetite, your taste buds, and your wallet. When you’ve finally made your decision, you are guaranteed to enjoy it. And that’s before you even start to consider the pudding board!
