The good pub guide review

There is a teeny-weeny argument among the hamlets of the Home Counties as to which qualifies as the smallest in England. Totford lays one such claim. It is very bijou, sitting plum in the beautiful Candover Valley, which makes its handsome pub a popular landmark for walkers. As Boris the stuffed boar's head mounted on the wall would no doubt ruefully testify, it's also a big hit with the hunting, shooting and fishing crowd. The bar has an easy-going atmosphere, leather button-back armchairs, little stools and wooden chairs around a mix of tables on wide floorboards, and high chairs against the counter where they offer Ringwood Ramsbury and Razorback on handpump, 15 wines by the glass and a rather special bloody mary. Leading off here is a dining room with flagstones and carpet, a raised fireplace with guns, bellows and other country knick-knacks above it, and chunky tables and chairs. Throughout are rugs on flagstones, exposed brick and stonework, a few bits of timbering and beamery, church candles, lots of photographs, some cosy booth seating and high-back upholstered dining chairs and leather wall seats around a mix of tables. Outside, there are teak tables and chairs and picnic-sets on the terrace, on gravel and on grass, and distant views. There's also a play area. The seven delightful bedrooms are named after game birds; dogs are allowed. Gun cabinets and 'vegan and environmentally friendly British bath and body products' also puts the accommodation in a class of its own.

The good pub guide food review

As well as pizzas from their outdoor wood-fired oven in summer, the pleasing food includes Scottish smoked salmon with watercress and fennel, truffle mac 'n' cheese fritters, crispy-battered haddock and chips, British brisket burger with ruby slaw and fries, pan-fried 8oz rump steak with chips and garlic and parsley butter, Sunday roasts (chicken or slow-roasted pork belly), and puddings such as rhubarb and custard crumble pie and sticky toffee pudding.
