The good pub guide review

In the remote little village of Pumsaint, close to the Dolaucothi Roman Gold Mines, this whitewashed pub with its pretty garden is a welcome stop-off. Part of the Dolaucothi Estate and owned by the National Trust, it was once a drovers' inn and dates back to the 16th c. The chatty bar has comfortable armchairs and a sofa, red and black floor tiles and a welcoming woodburning stove. There are stone and glass bottles on the mantelpiece, local artwork on the walls and books of local and historic interest; darts and a children's corner with colouring books and board games; background music. The likes of Evan Evans, Gower, Purple Moose and Wye Valley are on handpump, along with several wines by the glass, local farm cider and a range of malt whiskies and gins. The terracotta-painted dining room has another woodburning stove, traditional local furniture that includes nice dining room chairs and tables on flagstones, and walls hung with local maps and old photos of the pub, village and Estate. The picnic tables in the neat garden overlook the Cothi River, where the pub has four miles of fishing rights. This is a warm and cosy place to stay, with three bedrooms (one is dog-friendly) complete with a half decanter of port and shortcake biscuits.

The good pub guide food review

The food varies significantly between winter and summer. In winter, as well as sandwiches and jacket potatoes, dishes include beer-battered haddock and chips, red lentil, cannellini bean and vegetable cottage pie, scampi and chips, and assorted pizzas and burgers. In summer, they open a pop-up Mediterranean restaurant (called the Riviera); expect the likes of prosciutto crudo with melon, chicken liver, orange and Cointreau pâté, sea bass fillet in tomato, caper, anchovy and olive sauce, Spanish-style sirloin steak with chickpea, tomato, potato and kale casserole, and puddings such as Greek honey and almond cake.
