The good pub guide review
This pub has had only 12 licensees since it opened in 1863 and the current ones have been here for 37 years now. It's no surprise they've not been in a hurry to leave, having given this straightforward-looking pub a great deal of atmosphere and individuality. The front door opens into a passage with a small counter and shelves of reference books for crossword buffs. This leads to two rooms: a cosy one at the front overlooking the street, and a panelled back room housing the main bar and traditional pub furnishings. A good mix of customers of all ages enjoy four well kept ales on handpump ' Adnams Southwold, Hook Norton Old Hooky, Shotover Scholar and a guest ale, usually sourced locally ' as well as an alcohol-free draught IPA, an extensive range of international bottled beers, around 35 malt whiskies and 20 wines by the glass (including champagne and sparkling wine). The pleasant back courtyard, with walls and heaters, can be covered with a huge awning; at the far end is a ten-seater dining/meeting room. Please note, no dogs or children.
The good pub guide food review
Honest, reasonably priced food includes sandwiches and baguettes, falafel with hummus, pie and mash with thick gravy, niçoise or greek salads, breaded plaice with chips and mushy peas, salmon fillet with a sweet, smoky sauce, sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce or red wine gravy, and puddings such as apple pie or sticky toffee pudding.
