The good pub guide review

You will have a ringside seat for watching the boats and birds on the River Orwell at this simply but pleasingly decorated former bargemen's pub. Its terrace abuts the water, but its parasol-shaded picnic tables get busy quickly, so on a warm day it's best to arrive early or request a window table for a meal indoors. The half-panelled little smoke room is pleasantly worn and unfussy with a woodburner in a brick fireplace and high-backed and other old-fashioned settles on a tiled floor. There's also a two-level dining room with country kitchen furniture on bare boards, and pictures and boat-related artefacts on the walls above the wainscotting. Adnams Ghost Ship, Broadside Southwold and a seasonal ale tapped from the cask by friendly, efficient staff, several wines by the glass and local cider; board games. Disabled access. The annual Thames Barge Race (end June/early July) is fun. The car park can fill up pretty quickly.

The good pub guide food review

As well as enjoyable fish dishes, the good trend-aware food includes nicely priced breakfasts, baguettes and ciabattas, falafel with roast beets and beetroot purée, roast chicken and bacon caesar salad, katsu chicken burger, lamb kofta with sweet potato fries, Asian-style 'poke' bowls with various toppings, red Thai vegetable or prawn curry, and classic puddings such as a cheesecake of the day and sticky toffee pudding.
