The good pub guide review

Set in the heart of a lovely Cotswolds village, a couple of miles south of Burford, this traditional 17th-c inn offers a homely welcome. The chatty, bustling small front bar has an unassuming but civilised feel, low beams and timbers, exposed stone walls, a log fire in a big fireplace and half a dozen or so farmhouse chairs and tables on the red-tiled floor. There are usually a few locals at the planked counter where they serve rotating Hook Norton ales, Ramsbury Farmers Best and a regularly changing ale mainly from Butcombe, Loose Cannon or Cotswold Lion on handpump, along with ten wines by the glass, seven malt whiskies and farm cider. A second room, similar but bigger, is used mainly for eating, and has another log-burning fireplace. The attractive side garden has picnic-sets.

The good pub guide food review

Cooked by the chef-patron, the rewarding food caters for classic and contemporay tastes. Dishes include ciabatta sandwiches, smoked mackerel pâté with toast, gravadlax with dill and mustard sauce, aubergine, courgette and pepper caponata, lambs liver and bacon with mash, red Thai fish curry, pork stroganoff with rice, pressed lamb shoulder with greens and mash, ham, egg and chips, sirloin steak with garlic butter and chips, and puddings such as spotted dick with custard and blackberry and apple crumble.
