The good pub guide review

If you're looking for a characterful country pub with nods to both its traditional roots and modern comforts, this won't disappoint. The long, softly lit beamed bar on the right has flagstones, cushioned wall seats, some little settles and high-backed dining chairs by the log fire at one end, Black Sheep Best, Ossett Yorkshire Blonde and Timothy Taylors Boltmaker on handpump, 15 gins, ten whiskies and 11 wines by the glass. A dining room towards the back is light and open, with big bow windows on either side and a casual contemporary look thanks to pastel garden settles with scatter cushions around tables painted pale green; background pop music. The neat sheltered back lawn and flagstoned side terrace have teak seats and tables, and there are also picnic-sets at the front; quoits. The 14 bedrooms are attractive and comfortable with plenty of antique charm, and breakfasts are good.

The good pub guide food review

Pleasing food includes wild mushroom bordelaise with white wine and garlic cream sauce, baked queenie scallops with red chilli, lime and soy sauce and roasted peanut and spring onion crust, crispy pork belly with braised pig cheek, turnips, quince and fondant potato, seared calves liver with mash, grilled bacon and green beans, 28-day aged sirloin steak with triple-cooked chips and café de paris butter, cauliflower and potato gnocchi with chestnut mushrooms, blue cheese and crispy sage, and puddings such as elderflower pannacotta and strawberry textures and chocolate nemesis.
