The good pub guide review

This casual and appealing bar-restaurant on the edge of Loch Shieldaig is next door to the Tigh an Eilean Hotel and under the same ownership. It's on two storeys: the bar is below, with dining on the first floor, where there's also a decked balcony with a magnificent view of the loch and the fishing village. It's gently contemporary and nicely relaxed with timber floors, timber-boarded walls, shiny bolts through exposed wooden roof beams and an open kitchen. There's a couple of changing ales such as Strathcarron Golden Cow and Red Cow on handpump and up to a dozen wines by the glass; background music, TV, darts, pool and board games. Tables in the sheltered little courtyard are well placed to enjoy the gorgeous position, and there are a few picnic sets on grass down by the water. If you wish to stay, the hotel has 11 comfortable bedrooms each with its own sitting area, but no TVs or telephones ' to preserve the peace. Breakfasts are good and hearty. It's a brilliant base for spotting otters, sea eagles, seals and even the rare pine marten; the view over forested Shieldaig Island to Loch Torridon and then out to the sea beyond is stunning.

The good pub guide food review

As well as shellfish straight from the jetty, the reliably good home-made food includes lunchtime sandwiches, cullen skink, moules marinière, hand-dived scallops and langoustines on generous platters, grilled goats cheese with rosemary and tomato salsa, pizzas from their wood-fired oven, battered haddock and chips, haggis, neeps and tatties, seafood stew, burger with coleslaw and chips, and puddings such as crème brûlée with Scottish raspberries and sticky toffee and date pudding with vanilla ice-cream.
