The good pub guide review

Bright, bustling and modern, this very pleasant hostelry boasts several individually and elegantly furnished linked rooms with contemporary décor and furnishings. The upper dining area has high-backed leather or wooden dining chairs around tables on stripped and polished floorboards, while the lower part occupies a light and airy conservatory with a pitched glazed roof, ceramic floor tiles, light coloured furnishings, original artwork and fresh flowers. The bustling bar is similarly furnished and has a few high bar stools against the sleek, smart counter where they serve beers such as Adnams Ghost Ship and St Austell Tribute on handpump, 24 good wines by the glass, a dozen malt whiskies and quite a few teas and coffees; background music. There are tables out on a sheltered deck, and in summer the front of the pub has masses of flowering hanging baskets and tubs. This is sister pub to the Black Horse at Ireland.

Appealing food includes lunchtime baguettes, goats cheese arancini with beetroot purée and rocket leaves, smoked paprika whitebait with herb aioli and crispy potato julienne, pork and apple scotch egg, pan-fried chicken breast with chorizo, asparagus and gnocchi in tarragon cream, grilled swordfish steak with white wine, prawn and cream sauce, Thai-spiced red pepper and butternut squash risotto with pine nuts, braised rolled pork belly with mash potato, hispi cabbage and cider, bacon and mustard cream, and puddings such as Italian meringue lemon tart and raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake.
