The good pub guide review

This handsome early 19th-c inn sits on a pretty islet between the River Kennet and the Kennet & Avon Canal. Arrive early if you want to sit outside; although the riverside terrace and mature garden have lots of seats and tables under large white parasols, they fill up fast. Inside, the simply furnished bar has a counter decorated in old pennies, traditional furniture on bare boards and Ramsbury Gold and a changing local guest on handpump, local cider and 17 wines by the glass (including fizz) served by helpful, friendly staff. There are various dining areas: the main one is decorated in classic country style with green panelled walls, decorative tiled flooring and a pretty fireplace, while the Potting Shed has garden tools, little watering cans and books on a dresser and large windows overlooking the garden. The eight well appointed riverside bedrooms are stylish and contemporary; all are dog-friendly and five come with their own private terrace.

Good food includes dishes such as heritage tomato and mozzarella salad, truffle mac 'n' cheese fritters, roast cauliflower with Persian-spiced lentils, spinach and chickpeas, seared bream with Cornish new potato niçoise, pan-fried 8oz rump steak with chips and garlic and parsley butter, crispy battered haddock with chips, and puddings such as eton mess pavlova and dark chocolate brownie.
