The good pub guide review

You can't beat the location of this expansive 18th-c coaching inn. It's set on a bend of the meandering, tree-fringed River Dee and next to a handsome stone bridge, with spectacular views from the terraces and grassy banks dipping down to the water. Grab a seat out here if you can. Inside, the ancient low-beamed bar has a red tiled floor, dark timbers, a log fire in a big inglenook and built-in old pews, and several dining areas are furnished with turkey rugs, large pot plants and frame-to-frame wall pictures. The airy dining conservatory also looks over the river. Helpful staff serve a fine array of drinks, including the likes of Brakspears Bitter, Jennings Cumberland, Marstons EPA and Ringwood Boondoggle on handpump, 16 wines by the glass, very impressive gin and malt whisky collections and a farm cider. Board games and newspapers too. There's a play tractor and swings in the garden to amuse the kids. This is beautiful Welsh Marches walking country.

The good pub guide food review

The food meets the usual high Brunning & Price standard, with a separate gluten-free menu and plenty of options for vegans and vegetarians. Typical dishes are smoked salmon with orange and beetroot salad, hummus and pitta, garlic and chilli king prawn, pea and mint tortellini with garden pea velouté and asparagus, chicken, ham and leek pie with mash and buttered greens, spiced five bean chilli with tortilla chips, pork sausages with mash and red cabbage, 10oz rib-eye steak with mustard and peppercorn sauce and chunky chips, and puddings such as chocolate and honeycomb cheesecake with vanilla ice-cream and summer pudding.
