The good pub guide review
This cosy, family-run pub has loads of character, with low beams, roughly coursed thick stone walls and partly slate and partly wooden floors. The atmosphere is chatty and easy-going, and although it's largely been opened out to give a sizeable eating area off the bar servery, there's a feeling of several communicating rooms. What was a smaller lower bar has been enlarged to include a second bar counter. Throughout the furniture is mainly pine, with comfortable leather sofas, wall settles and tub chairs; also, farming implements, hand-presses, an open fire and a woodburning stove. Attentive staff serve local ales such as Bristol Beer Factory Fortitude, Prescott Hill Climb and Stroud Organic Pale Ale on handpump, eight wines by the glass and a farm cider; board games. Sliding doors now connect the restaurant with the large garden, with its lovely views and plenty of seats. The bedrooms are attractively decorated and comfortable. You can walk around the surrounding fields and beyond.

Rewarding food using local produce (with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options clearly marked) is cooked by the landlady's son and includes baguettes, gin-cured salmon with pickled fennel, smoked mackerel rillettes with pea shoots, chicken in a basket with chips, wild mushroom and nut loaf with crushed potatoes and celeriac purée, venison stew with creamy mash, overnight slow-cooked lamb with mash, pea purée, roasted roots and red wine jus, burger and chips, trout fillet with courgetti, charred leeks and dill hollandaise, and puddings such as chocolate tart with hazelnut and rose ice-cream and cashew and vanilla cheesecake with rhubarb compote.
