The good pub guide review

There's a pleasing café feel and civilised but informal atmosphere at the well run, bustling 'Cod', tucked away down a small street in Chelsea. A central dark-panelled bar has high red chairs beside the counter with more around equally high tables on either side of the log-effect gas fire, button-back wall banquettes with cream and red patterned seats, little stools and plain wooden chairs around a medley of tables on black-painted floorboards, patterned wallpaper above a dado and a shelf with daily papers. There are ornate flower arrangements, a big portrait above the fire, several naval prints and quiet background music. Helpful staff serve Bombardier, Shepherd Neame Whitstable Bay and guests such as Sambrooks on handpump, 18 wines by the glass and a thoughtful range of spirits. The light and airy restaurant area is a total contrast: high-backed pretty wall seats and plush dining chairs around light tables, an open kitchen, fish prints on pale blue paintwork, a second fireplace and an impressive skylight. A back garden has chunky benches and tables under a summer awning.

The good pub guide food review

Well presented, enjoyable food includes truffle mac 'n' cheese fritters, pork and apple sausage rolls, seared bream fillet with Cornish new potato niçoise, chicken, tarragon and leek pie with mash and buttered greens, British brisket burger with ruby slaw, fries and onion relish, and puddings such as lemon tart with crème fraîche and rhubarb and custard crumble pie.
