The good pub guide review

This tucked-away 18th-c Mayfair local (once owned by Madonna and Guy Ritchie) contains a number of attractive spaces, the nicest of which is probably at the back where several panelled booths have suede bench seating, animal-picture scatter cushions, some etched glasswork and oil candles on tables. Elegant spoked chairs are grouped around dark tables on worn floorboards, a couple of long elbow shelves are lined with high chairs and one fireplace has a coal fire while the other is piled with logs. At the front it's simpler, with cushioned bench seating and pubby tables and chairs on floor tiles. All sorts of artwork from cartoons to oil paintings line the walls and the ceiling has interesting old hand-drawn street maps; background music. Caledonian Deuchars IPA, a beer named for the pub (also from Caledonian) and Marstons 61 Deep on handpump, 17 wines by the glass from a well chosen list, and professional, friendly service. The smart dining room upstairs has plush furnishings, large artworks and a huge gilt mirror above a fireplace; there are private dining facilities too.

The good pub guide food review

Nicely presented, British-focused food includes lunchtime sandwiches with fries, spiced pumpkin and pear soup, roast bone marrow with red wine jus, tempura soft shell crab with kimchi salad and sweet chilli sauce, torched mackerel with warm beetroot and potato and herb salad, duck and Toulouse sausage cassoulet, jackfruit and lentil pie with sweet potato mash and green beans, and puddings such as chocolate brownie with banana ice-cream and mulled wine-poached pears with gingerbread crumble and ice-cream.
